Helsinki-Madrid-Findesign

We went to the Matadero yesterday to see the Finnish design exhibition that recently opened. The show itself was great (see pictures below) but I'd never been to the space before, and although it is still very much a work in progress, that fucker is going to be massive. It was formerly the premises of an enormous slaughterhouse, located near the remains of the Río Manzanares and about a 20-minute walk from the Reina Sofía. It's a very dynamic locale with theaters, study areas, a cafe and makeshift rooms for forums and public gatherings of all persuasions.... Once the rest of the grounds are operating, it will be a cultural district in its own right with territory spanning what I would maybe liken to a small university campus. Muy cool.

This last image is of an entirely different exhibition, but it's the first show you come across upon entering the general area and provides a deft encapsulation of the plaza's previous function.
